Bhilar Blanco 2021

Tasting: David Sampredo-Gil’s Bodegas Bhilar has slowly become one of the most respected small wineries in Rioja. His vineyards are bursting with life due to the biodiversity he encourages using organic and biodynamic farming. Based in the subregion of Alavesa around the town of Elvillar (Bhilar is the Basque word for Elvillar), he makes an array of exceptional wine that stun his fans year after year. Partial skin contact gives this wine high viscosity with white fruits on the nose with a hint of guava. On the palate the wine is super fresh with loads of acidity and length, fresh green fruit, pear flesh and fresh mountain herbs.

Tasting: Maturana Blanca is a heritage variety in Rioja, only grown in small amounts, but making a comeback. Barrel fermentation and aging on lees has produced a powerful, full bodied white, bursting with personality. Aromas of cooked lemon, and red apple complement a rich and textural palate of custard apple, ripe yellow peach, greengage, subtle pastry and dairy notes, and a long and complex finish.

Massimo Selección Godello 2020

Tasting: Stepping out of the shadow of Galicia’s most widely planted white variety Albariño are varieties such as Treixadura and Godello. This is an example of one such premium wine made from Godello in the vertiginous canyon-side vineyards of Ribeira Sacra. Punchy aromas of cooked citrus and honeysuckle blossom with a palate that transitions the drinker to flavours of concentrated grapefruit citrus, waxy lemon peel, and white peach, all wrapped up by crunchy acidity.

Pontellón Albariño 2022

Tasting: From the southernmost subregion of Rías Baixas, O Rosal on the banks of the River Miño with the Atlantic Ocean to its west. The effect of the Atlantic is very prominent in this wine, bracing acidity frames a palate of intense lime citrus, oyster shell, minerality and salinity.

Finca Trasdairelas Godello 2020

Tasting: An excellent example of how Godello can also produce, fuller bodied powerful wines, from one of the pioneers of recovering this indigenous Galician variety. Rich and muscular but with restraint and elegance, the nose shows intense notes of stone fruits and white flowers, a voluptuous palate is kept in check with a fine acid line, it shows flavours of dense grapefruit citrus, ripe stone fruit, cooked green apple and crushed slate.

Calabobos Albariño 2018

Tasting: Calabobos is the Galician word for ‘drizzle’, nodding its hat to the inclement weather and high rainfall of Galicia. A limited-edition wine, only 1800 litres made each vintage from the highest quality fruit from their vineyards. An incredibly complex wine that retains amazing levels of freshness as it matures, a plethora of flavours explode on the palate after a fragrant nose of candied lime and wet stones. A party for the senses, it has flavours of white fruit, lemon pith, apricot, with traces of bitter almond and an underlying minerality.

Lagar de Costa Albariño 2021 

Tasting: Located near the town of Cambados, their vineyards overlook the Ría de Arousa, the estuary of the Río Ulla. Benchmark Albariño that others are judged by. Heady aromas of jasmine and lime blossom, giving way to a intense palate of candied lime, lemon zest, and apricot flesh with perfectly balanced, framing acidity.

Lagar de Costa Tradición Albariño 2018

Tasting: Barrel aged Albariño is something of a rarity, the right quality of fruit and winemaking knowhow is essential. Aged in old oak Foudres. This Albariño retains its characteristic freshness, with all the positive impacts of oak aging. Slightly spiced ripe stone fruit on the nose, with a palate of candied lemon skin, smoky spiced vanilla and dried apricot.

Ultreia Godello 2020

Tasting: Raúl Pérez is considered one of the icon winemakers of Spain’s northwest, learning from one of the pioneers of the resurgence of Bierzo, Álvaro Palacios, Raúl’s name is now synonymous with Bierzo. The fruit for this wine comes from the village of Valtuille de Abajo, the nose shows aromas of honey, jasmine and grapefruit blossom, the palate, rich and sumptuous, but kept in check by delicate acidity, shows grapefruit citrus, buttered toasted bread, and hints of smoke, with an incredibly long finish.

Tasting: Raúl Pérez is considered one of the icon winemakers of Spain’s northwest, learning from one of the pioneers of the resurgence of Bierzo (as well as, and more famously, Priorat) Álvaro Palacios, Raúl’s name is now synonymous with Bierzo. From the La Vizcaína range, each wine is named after the single vineyard from which the fruit originates. La del Vivo is a benchmark Godello for the region, concentrated, and refined, a nose of mango skin, bay leaf and citrus, with muscular yet elegant palate of tangerine peel, fresh grapefruit, caraway, graphite with an exceptionally long finish.

El Berrakin Jaén Blanca 2020

Tasting: From Sierra de Gredos natural wine maestro Daniel V. Ramos, a self-described ‘Span-Aussie’ (born in Australia to Spanish parents, then grew up in Madrid). Daniel builds texture into the wine with 17 days of skin contact. An exceptionally interesting wine showing green apple and grapefruit skin, with green tea tannins and fresh salinity. Daniel’s vineyards are organically tended, his wines are made with a minimal intervention philosophy, small levels of sulphur used at bottling only, and his wines are also bottled un-fined and unfiltered.
